As you may know, I was planning to host a retreat back in 2018/2019. I got so excited with what would be offered at the retreat but then I started to plan out logistics. Knowing my audience, I had a lot of conflicting emotions digging into the cost of putting this on and how much I would need to charge. This retreat planning was giving me life but I did not feel right about encouraging folks I knew who were already dealing with debt to spend the amount of money necessary for the retreat to be a success as I had planned.
I’m sure we would all love to go to Bali/Jamaica for a week and feast on raw foods, participate in daily yoga classes and meditation sessions and do adventures up and down mountains but most people in my community don’t have that type of money. They are working their way out of school debt, mortgage debt and credit card debt.
Working your way out of debt is a priority. At the same time, you can create a staycation for a fraction of the cost and support your local health and wellness economy.
Doing a retreat in Bali could cost you almost $7K (includes airfare). That’s $907 a day to go to Bali for this experience. Look at all of what you could do applying the same model to your local economy:
🥝 Raw vegan meals/Cooked Vegan Meals – $80 (2 visits for the month with appetizer and meal each time)
🥝 Fitness training / yoga classes / Group mediation sessions – $0 if you already pay gym membership or $20 if you go to a donation based nonprofit for meditation sessions
🥝 Group adventures daily with trips to the ocean, hiking and more – $0
🥝 Wellness workshops that include food demos or recipe prep classes – $0 because you can do this at home with your cookbooks. Crack those open and put them to use.
🥝 Daily educational talks, courses, and demos – $0. I recommend having an audiobook subscription or going to the library and staying educated on things you care about.
🥝 Motivational speakers – $0. Get Les Brown’s audio book and listen to it on a daily basis for inspiration.
🥝 Connecting with like-minded people to discuss issues you care about – $0
🥝 Spa Day (1 massage) – $124
🥝 1 private hour long coaching/therapy session -$170
🥝🥝 Grand Total = $394
It’s not possible to do all of these things in a week while you are working so it would be on a variety of weekends throughout the month. That’s a 94% savings and you get to sleep in your own bed.
This not only supports your own wealth building but also a culture of health in your community. Supporting health and wellness providers means they succeed and others are encouraged to go into that work and become providers as well. If your neighborhood had a health food store, a yoga center, meditation center, and a gym don’t you think you would be happier and more inclined to live a healthy lifestyle almost 100% of the time?
