If your goal is to lose unwanted belly fat, the secret may lie in balancing your hormones, specifically if you’re a woman.
Here are some signs that you may have a hormonal imbalance:
- Fatigue
- Low energy
- Weight gain
- Foggy thinking
- Irritability
- Hair loss
- Digestive difficulties
- Heart palpitations
Stress is the source. There are environmental stressors, which include the foods you eat, the water you drink, the air around you, the products you use on your body or in your home, and excess time on screens. There is also emotional stress from work and home obligations.
My approach to healing hormonal imbalance utilizes:
- Herbs
- Nutrition
- Lifestyle: exercise, sleep, emotional well-being, and detoxification
With lifestyle changes, it is best to take baby steps which you can do with support and resources in the Self Care Salon program.
On the nutrition front, you want to consume magnesium and calcium to support hormone health and other nutrients like potassium, zinc, folate, and vitamins A, B6, C and D. All of these can be found in foods. You want to make sure you are rotating these foods to get a full spectrum of nutrients.
Avoid:
- Dairy
- Processed foods (read labels and don’t consume items with ingredients you don’t know what they are)
- Soda (including diet)
- Juices that are not fresh
- Refined sugar
- Too much salt (causes bloating)
- Chemicals (buy organic)
Your meals should include healthy protein (seeds, quinoa, nuts, beans and lentils) and having one of these at each meal may help to keep you satisfied longer so you’re not snacking all the time. Also, you should consume veggies and fruits and healthy fats like avocados and healthy omega 3 sources.
Then there are herbs that facilitate hormone balancing, such as black cohosh and chaste berries. Essential oils like rosemary, which promotes mental clarity and improves circulation are also helpful.
It’s also important to exercise. Even if you are not in the mood, a 20 minute activity as simple as walking and especially if you can do it outside will do so much for your mental, emotional and physical health. I like to balance out my day with walking in the morning and resistance training followed by stretching in the evening.
For the next 30 days in the Self Care Salon, we have a Get Active Stay Active Challenge to encourage daily activity.
There will be daily check-ins so we hold each other accountable. We also go into more stress relieving techniques in the Self Care for Less Stress program.
