My dad took calculated risk to provide for his family and build wealth. He moved from Jamaica, West Indies to America in 1968 looking for better financial opportunities and he managed to achieve a six-figure salary, become an entrepreneur, and own a home and other real estate property.
The entrepreneurship journey is not easy but balancing hustle with self-preservation and faith, you will reap the fruits of your labor.
In this episode, my dad mentioned I was an obedient child and I wanted to dig into what the research shows for obedient children and their success trajectory is in life. America tends to show that being obedient is the opposite of what you need to do to build wealth. But it may just be a culture thing and not so much a determinant of future success.
A global study of 227,431 parents from 90 nations showed child independence was more popular in nations with greater wealth and higher percentage of educated populations; obedience was more popular in nations with less wealth and lower percentages of educated and urban populations.
This makes sense because when I compare children in Jamaica compared to America, their manners are so much better. They tend to be more respectful.
Apparently, per that global study, personal socioeconomic status and not national socioeconomic characteristics predicted individual parents’ prioritization of child independence and obedience; higher social class predicted greater likelihood of endorsing independence and not endorsing obedience.
I must say I had the best of both worlds because while I was obedient since I had the fear of God put into me by my parents [with just one look I felt like my life would be over (parents know that look)], I also had lots of long deep conversations and debates over family breakfast and dinner when we ate together as a family on Sundays. My mom especially did not make me feel like I was intellectually inferior just because I was young. I could be inquisitive, get answers and engage in debate without being silenced.
