Did you know you can get cancer from acid reflux?
It’s true. If you experience chronic acid reflux, which is when you’re having acid reflux more than once a week, you’re at a slightly increased risk for esophageal cancer.
To avoid this, you should avoid alcohol, get down to a normal weight if you’re obese, eat more fruits and vegetables since it’s been shown to reduce the risk of esophageal cancer, eliminate meat since studies have shown that it’s linked to increased risk of all types of cancers of the digestive system, and avoid overeating.
Overeating was tough for me. I grew up in a home with two kitchens, two refrigerators and a house stocked with food from Costco. Food and my shows provided comfort and relaxation during my childhood. As an adult, when adulting gets hard, I tend to want to do the same thing – just snuggle with food and a good show. Unfortunately, that life is not for me any longer because I know the ill effects of food, not just intellectually but I have a horrible graphic etched in my mind of my grandma home on hospice care screaming in pain as each of her organs failed one by one due to complications from diabetes.
So I adult some more and make the wise choice to stick to intermittent fasting (IF) where I have my first meal at noon and finish my last meal at 8 pm. This schedule works for me due to my commute and exercise routine.
Still, even with intermittent fasting, exercising and drinking water, there were times I struggled with cravings of sweet cereal and refined foods.
How does one stay committed to intermittent fasting and avoiding processed foods and refined sugar when you go through emotional issues in your relationships or it’s the weekend and you want to play and treat yourself?
Ultimately, it comes down to focus and self discipline. A very interesting and beautiful vegan man by the name of Dr. Nun S. Amen Ra once said:
Subjecting yourself to self-imposed discipline is the surest way to increase the quality of your existence. Period.
I already know this to be true because my body feels amazing with a 16 hour fasting window. I sleep well and my mind is laser focused. Plus my body is on 10 because it is burning more fat and able to process the smaller quantity of food a lot better than piling on food non-stop throughout the day, which just overloads my digestive system and overworks my body making me tired.
It also comes down to remembering why I decided to eat the way I do and follow a 16:8 IF plan. Like Simon Sinek says “Start With Why”. You don’t just start with the why though, you put the why up on the wall so you’re constantly reminded when times get tough and you just want to stuff your face with everything in the kitchen because you grown and who is going to tell you not to do it.
No one will tell you. That’s why you need to tell yourself. You put the you who decided with conviction to make the right choices for herself stay present in your physical space so she can talk to the you at your weakest and most vulnerable moments. Maybe you save your “why” as the background image on your phone or tape it above your bathroom sink or on the fridge door. Find what works for you to stay committed to your self care.
