I hear young women saying they are craving fast food, and some prominent physicians are even suggesting hot dogs should be consumed. But when we look at what these foods are doing inside a developing brain, there is good reason to be concerned.
When adolescents and young adults choose what to eat, they often view fast food as a harmless indulgence, a cheap source of quick calories, or simply part of hanging out with friends. But clinical trials, pediatric neuroimaging studies, and nutritional psychiatry research suggest a much more concerning reality: a diet dominated by ultra-processed fast foods and processed meats can interfere with brain development, cognitive processing, and mental health.
To understand why processed burgers, fries, sodas, and hot dogs can be particularly problematic for young people, we have to look beyond calories. We need to look at what these foods are doing to the blood vessels, metabolism, gut, inflammation, and neural wiring of the developing brain.
Fast Food and the Speed of the Adolescent Brain
We tend to think of high cholesterol and unhealthy blood fats as problems that show up much later in life. We imagine heart disease as something to worry about in our 50s or 60s, not something that could matter to a 16-year-old trying to learn in school.
But the connection between metabolic health and brain health begins much earlier.
A 2026 Finnish study examining 251 adolescents between the ages of 15 and 17 found that problems with lipid metabolism were associated with differences in cognitive processing. Higher blood concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, triglycerides, and saturated fatty acids were associated with slower processing speed.
In other words, the health of a teenager’s blood and cardiovascular system is connected to how efficiently the brain processes information.
That is important because the cardiovascular system and the brain are not separate. The brain depends on a constant supply of oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood, while structures such as white matter and myelin help information travel rapidly through neural networks.
What protects the cardiovascular system can therefore help protect the brain systems young people rely on to think, learn, remember, and react.
This is one reason regularly feeding young people meals dominated by saturated fats and heavily processed ingredients deserves more attention. The consequences are not necessarily problems waiting decades in the future. Metabolic health is already influencing how efficiently the adolescent brain functions today.
The Connection Between Visceral Fat, Inflammation, and Depression
The relationship between food and the young brain extends beyond learning and processing speed. It also affects emotional health.
Adolescent depression has become an enormous public-health concern. Screens, social media, academic pressure, relationships, trauma, family environments, and many other factors deserve attention. But there is another piece of the conversation that is sometimes overlooked: what is happening metabolically inside the body.
Research has identified a biochemical relationship between obesity, inflammation, and depression.
One particularly important factor is visceral fat. Unlike the fat that sits directly beneath the skin, visceral fat surrounds the internal organs and is metabolically active. This tissue can release inflammatory compounds that influence systems throughout the body.
In adolescents, visceral fat has been associated with both the presence and severity of depression.
That matters because inflammation does not remain isolated in one part of the body. Chronic, low-grade inflammation can influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, or HPA, axis, the system involved in regulating the body’s response to stress.
When this system becomes chronically dysregulated, stress hormones such as cortisol can remain elevated. Over time, that environment can interfere with biological processes the brain relies upon for healthy adaptation and growth, including the growth factors involved in neurogenesis.
This does not mean that eating fast food causes every case of depression or anxiety. Mental health is far more complicated than that. But it does mean that we should stop pretending that the metabolic environment created by a young person’s diet has nothing to do with the health of their brain.
What Highly Processed Foods Can Do Inside the Bloodstream
Another problem emerges when we look at what is actually inside many ultra-processed foods.
Fast-food meals, sugary beverages, and processed meats can deliver large amounts of sodium, phosphates, refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and other highly processed ingredients in a single meal.
One concern is the formation of Advanced Glycation End-products, or AGEs.
When sugars react with proteins in the body, they can trigger a process known as glycation. This process alters the structure and function of proteins and contributes to oxidative stress and inflammation.
Instead of thinking of sugar only in terms of calories or weight gain, we need to understand that excessive exposure can influence the chemistry occurring inside the body.
Processed meats introduce additional concerns. Foods such as hot dogs can contain high levels of sodium, added phosphates, and preservatives. Excessive exposure to these compounds can contribute to vascular dysfunction, oxidative stress, and other metabolic changes that ultimately matter to the brain because neurons depend on healthy circulation.
A brain cannot thrive without a healthy blood supply.
When blood vessels become damaged and metabolic dysfunction develops, the effects do not stop at the heart. The brain is one of the most metabolically demanding organs in the body, and its cells require a continuous delivery of oxygen and nutrients.
That is why conversations about hot dogs, fries, sodas, and processed burgers should go beyond whether a young person can “get away with” eating them without gaining weight.
Weight is only one piece of the story.
Processed Foods, Depression, and Anxiety
The relationship between heavily processed diets and mental health becomes even more concerning when we look at young adults.
Researchers at the University of British Columbia examined undergraduate dietary patterns using a biopsychosocial framework. They wanted to determine whether junk-food consumption remained associated with mental-health symptoms even after considering other important factors in a young person’s life.
After adjusting for sleep, physical activity, stress, and social support, a dietary pattern high in processed and junk foods remained significantly associated with higher depression scores. The same dietary pattern was also associated with higher anxiety scores.
This is important because it reminds us that nutrition does not operate in isolation.
Sleep matters. Exercise matters. Relationships matter. Stress matters. Social support matters.
And food matters too.
One reason for this is the inflammatory and oxidative stress produced by dietary patterns high in trans fats, refined carbohydrates, and certain highly processed additives. These dietary patterns can also alter the gut environment and affect beneficial microorganisms involved in metabolic and neurological health.
The gut and brain are in constant communication. Changes in the intestinal environment can influence inflammation, immune signaling, and biological pathways involved in neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.
Again, this does not mean that a hamburger causes depression or that someone can cure an anxiety disorder simply by eating vegetables.
It means something more nuanced and, in many ways, more important: the brain exists inside the body, and the biological environment we create through our everyday habits can either support or work against its ability to function well.
You Cannot Separate the Developing Brain From the Food Feeding It
Young people are living through one of the most important periods of brain development.
The adolescent and young-adult brain is still changing, adapting, strengthening neural pathways, and responding to its environment. This period of heightened neuroplasticity creates vulnerability, but it also creates tremendous opportunity.
A young brain is highly responsive to what surrounds it.
That includes relationships, stress, sleep, movement, learning, and food.
Craving fast food does not mean a young person lacks discipline. These foods are intentionally designed to be intensely rewarding and easy to consume. Combinations of refined carbohydrates, salt, fat, flavorings, and other ingredients can make highly processed foods extremely appealing.
But something being easy to crave does not make it harmless.
When we normalize fast food as an everyday meal or promote processed meats such as hot dogs as healthy choices for young people, we need to consider the biological consequences alongside convenience, taste, and cost.
Food is providing the raw materials that a developing brain uses every single day.
Young people need nutrients to build cell membranes, maintain healthy blood vessels, support neurotransmitter production, regulate inflammation, maintain the gut microbiome, and fuel the enormous amount of energy required by the brain.
A dietary pattern built primarily around ultra-processed foods cannot provide the same biological environment as one centered around nutrient-dense whole foods.
Building a Brain That Can Think, Learn, and Adapt
Protecting the youth brain does not require young people to become obsessed with eating perfectly.
It means changing what we consider normal.
Whole and minimally processed foods should be the foundation rather than the exception. A plant-rich eating pattern can provide antioxidants, prebiotic fibers, vitamins, minerals, and healthy unsaturated fats that support the brain, gut, blood vessels, and metabolic system simultaneously.
That means making fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole plant foods, nuts, seeds, and other nutrient-dense foods more accessible and appealing to young people rather than assuming burgers, fries, sodas, and processed meats are simply inevitable parts of growing up.
We also have to recognize that food choices do not occur in a vacuum. Young people eat what is available, affordable, convenient, socially acceptable, and promoted to them.
That means adults have a responsibility too.
If we care about helping young people regulate their emotions, concentrate in school, build resilience, and protect their mental health, nutrition deserves a place in that conversation.
We cannot ask a developing brain to perform at its highest level while repeatedly giving it an environment that works against healthy neurological development.
What young people put on their plates today is helping shape the brain they will have to think with tomorrow.
