A study done on more than 3,800 people in Sweden showed that the participants who had long-term exposure to high job demands played a role in significant weight gain only for women. In just over half of the women who had been subjected to high demands, a major increase in weight took place over the 20 years of the study. This gain in weight was at least 20 percent higher than in women subject to low job demands.
When it came to the level of demands at work, only the women were affected and not men. This is because the demands create chronic stress in the body for women plus we tend to have a perfectionism mindset that we need to do it all and do it all perfectly or else we will be eaten by the modern day lion, tigers, and bears, like loss of our jobs and financial security and we may be the only breadwinner for the household with children to feed, school and clothe.
Then there is also the balance of self care practices with work and household chores, that are often left to women to deal with even if they have partners.
