You may already know the basics of how wine is made if you are a wine lover. However, you may not have known that your wine may not be vegan.
During the fermentation process of making the wine, the liquid becomes cloudy which would not be good for the supermarket shelves so a fining process is used to extract the particulates in the wine that make it cloudy.
Egg whites and casein, which is milk protein, are typically used in this fining process and then somehow filtered out so they’re not listed as an ingredient because technically they’re not. They’re processing agents. However, due to the nature of the wine, you can’t filter it all out. It is now part of the wine since tiny traces of animal product can be absorbed.
On this episode, I explain how vegan wines are processed differently and mention one that is also gluten-free if you have an interest for vegan, gluten-free wines.
Vegan wines do go through a refinement process using other materials which I speak about on this episode. Another option is also unfined/unfiltered wine, which is typically on the label so you will know if it has undergone a refinement process.
