I have never been a fan of hand sanitizer, that’s until I started going hiking and I noticed Dr Bronner’s made some healthier versions using essential oils. I was always concerned about the chemicals in conventional sanitizers. Sanitizers are full of toxic chemicals, like phthalates, which mimics hormones and disrupts the endocrine glands. Endocrine disruptors have been linked to diabetes and obesity.
Using sanitizers also disrupts our hand microbiome, the “good” bacteria that keep our skin, and our bodies, healthy.
But once we hit COVID, all the news had folks in fear and people really went crazy with sanitizing solution. I took a plane from NYC a couple months ago and all the passengers on the plane, which was packed by the way, had out disinfectant sprays and sanitizer spraying everything and wiping down everything.
I love a clean environment but this was overboard. I started coughing from all the sprays.
The irony is that the sanitizers have triclosan which can damage the immune system.
Ultimately, soap and water is the best and only way to clean yourself in the least harmful and most effective way. When you are out hiking or in an environment where you need to disinfect your hands, opt for phthalate-free and triclosan-free sanitizers.
COVID is still an issue. More and more people are getting infected but those who understand how this virus is being transmitted and who are getting infected, understand that there is a high likelihood that we will all get this virus. We should be thinking about how to protect ourselves in a healthy way from dying from the virus and support our immune systems for a speedy recovery.
