I recently sat down with the founder of Cargill Fitness, Marcus Cargill.
Cargill Fitness offers personal and group training to folks who want to lose fat, gain muscle, sports train, and live a healthier lifestyle. Marcus and his friends who are also trainers host a weekly fitness class at 9:45 am on Saturdays at Manhattan Beach Pier called Sweat Saturdays.
In this episode, we chop it up on his fitness and clean eating journey. He also mentions grounding, which we have not really discussed on the RawFoodMealPlanner.com site at all 😮
Before I went to workout with Marcus for the first time, I was anxious to get out the house and engage in life as normal again. I wanted to go back to the beach and put my feet in the sand and chill. I wanted to workout with people, be in community and have a good time as was my regular routine pre-pandemic.
It had been months of me sheltering in place due to LA City’s COVID-19 restrictions so I was so excited to get to be back on the beach. I took the long drive from Hollywood to Manhattan Beach, which is about 25 miles, and struggled to find parking but it was all worth it when I got my feet in the sand. I just stood there and breathed in that fresh ocean air and took in the views of the mountains in the distance. For a moment, I felt like I was alone on the beach – just connecting to nature and the creator of it all. It was so euphoric, I could have stayed in that state for hours.
Once I came back to reality and still on a high from that bliss state, I introduced myself to Marcus, put my bag and mat down, and got into position for our first exercise, which were sprints on the sand. It was the first exercise and I was already being defeated by the sand holding me back and my lack of cardiovascular fitness showing as I was trailing behind everyone struggling to get my legs up. By the end of the hour though, I felt so good that I powered through the difficult moments. As I laid down on the sand to catch my breath, my body just tingled, feeling relaxed after all that activity.
This is the power of grounding. We as humans are bio-electrical beings. Walking on the beach (or wherever it is safe to walk with your bare feet on the ground) improves blood flow and energy.
2020 was the year of anxiety with political and racial tensions that spread into homes and divided families. Anxiety creates irritability and increases cortisol (stress hormone), which creates inflammation in the body which creates more anxiety and it goes on in a dangerous cycle. This causes the adrenals to become exhausted, which then causes chronic fatigue.
You can ground the inflammation out of the body with 20 to 30 minutes of connecting with the Earth with your bare feet or by laying on the ground. I have heard case studies of people getting rid of persistent muscle spasms with grounding. Others who have dealt with chronic pain, and struggled to sleep because the pain in the body had caused cortisol to increase, found relief through grounding. The Earth even resets our circadian rhythm (our internal clock) which has helped folks overcome jet lag.
That day on the beach healed me. It provided the medicine of community, physical activity, and the grounding charge of Mother Nature herself.
Movement is one of our natural detoxification methods. While Manhattan Beach is pretty far for me these days, I still make it a point to connect with nature daily through movement. I go for walks in the morning for a great boost of detoxification and energy. I walk up and down the stairs in the front of my building for 15 to 20 minutes to engage my leg muscles and get my heart rate up.
Walking the stairs is a great way to work your biggest muscle groups, get your lymphatic system circulating, and get your blood pumping. I don’t wear weights, although I have been planning to buy a weighted vest to make my walks more intense. However, the hills in my neighborhood provide the resistance needed to fire up the fat burning even more.
