My mom has been raving on the podcast about her air fryer. Some in the Group were skeptical to try it because of some pressing questions they had for which I was able to dig up the answers.
How does an air fryer fry with no oil?
“It works by circulating hot air that contains fine oil droplets around the food to produce a crunchy, crispy exterior.” source
“An air fryer is essentially a miniature convection oven that evenly circulates hot air around your food, helping your food to crisp up without much additional oil.” source
“It’s the air created by the machine’s fan that keeps the surface of the food being cooked dry, resulting in an extra-crispy exterior and a fluffy (think French fries) or moist (chicken thighs) interior that is reminiscent of the results of deep-frying.” source
How high does the temperature get?
“It also has the ability to reach very high temperatures (with some models getting up to 430 degrees F) enhancing its ability to quickly cook foods” source
“The functionality of your air fryer will vary slightly from model to model.” source
This device is not to make raw food dishes. However, let’s be real. We all are eating cooked food also and it’s great to have tools that make healthy eating delicious and easy to prepare. My mom says she uses her Nuwave air fryer to prepare plantain, sweet potato chips and French fries without oil.
Why should we minimize oil?
Excessive oil in our food can contribute to skin issues, like pimples and acne. It also could be preventing you from losing excess fat. Oil is not a whole food. A whole food has nutrients and fiber so you are satiated and nourished. Oil is a concentrated form of fat without the fiber so you consume more and you gain more fat as opposed to eating the whole food and stopping until satisfied and full. I talk more about oil here, like the type I use and how much I use. I keep my oil consumption to a minimum primarily because of my history with acid reflux. My digestive system does not like oily food.
