The Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010 but the gifts keep on coming. May 9th, one of it’s laws went into effect requiring grocers and restaurants with more than 20 locations to list calorie counts on its menu. I am not really into calorie counting but I love this because it brings more awareness especially as we are fighting an obesity epidemic in this country.
The obesity problem is affecting our children. They are having adult issues like high blood pressure and cholesterol issues. Childhood obesity, high blood pressure, and physical inactivity are associated with retinal microvascular abnormalities, which is a sign of retinopathy. Retinopathy is the eyes being affected by diabetes. I remember when I did my talk in my childhood church, I was asked about this.
Even if adults cannot save themselves, they should strive to be an example for their children by using their purchasing power to fill their home with fruits and vegetables and playing outdoors with their children. They should push water instead of soft drinks or colored water and sugar.
How can we promote the healthy lifestyle in our communities?
We did a previous episode about asthma. So many children are dealing with this. Asthma and obesity go hand-in-hand in low income urban neighborhoods across the country. In these neighborhoods, there is limited access to healthy food. Part of the problem is awareness and education so I encourage you to share these videos so you can expand the network of informed people. Beyond that, I want to explore how we can bring healthy foods into low income neighborhoods and if it would be viable. Would low income communities make the decision to choose healthier items given the option?
The Harvard article referenced in the sources below stated: “Obese people are 92% more likely to develop asthma than lean individuals and severe asthmatics are more likely to be obese, according to researchers from the Center. Factors that may influence this connection include the pressure of excess weight on the lungs, alterations to the immune system caused by obesity, and the diets babies are exposed to in the womb and during infancy.”
Wow, diets babies are exposed to while in the womb – 🎤 drop line right there. I’m actually very happy Harvard and team is talking about this. We have come full circle. This entire month is focused on womb wellness. This is why it’s so important. This is the first environment for baby and where it gets its nutrients. Then when it comes out the womb, it is grabbing more nutrients from mommy to build its immune system. It is important for women to take up their role as leaders of households and take care of their bodies so they can bring healthy children into the world.
Hopefully, this episode will help.
