Drinking water helps you lose fat faster and keep it off longer. Our bodies are 50 to 75% water. Water is super important because it flushes toxins out of the body and helps supply nutrients from your food to the cells of your body.
A research study showed that obese people who drank 2 cups of water before their meals over a 3 month period lost on average 5 lbs more than the other group in the research study who did not drink water before their meals. A year later, the study showed that the water drinkers maintained the weight loss.
Becoming conscious about drinking more water has a domino effect in that it will make you feel so confident about your body and the healthy changes and commitments you’re making to yourself. Other healthy changes will happen and you will be able to stick with them on a consistent basis.
This was my experience. As early as my college days at NYU, I knew I should’ve been drinking more water but I hated the taste of water. So I decided to train myself to just get more water in. The goal at the time was not even to enjoy water but to just get it in so I could acquire a taste for it. Since I knew I spent 85% of my time on campus and 15% of my time at home, I came up with a plan where I would only drink water on campus and then when at home I could drink whatever I wanted – juice (not organic, raw and cold-pressed at that time. Just pasteurized juice from the grocery store), soda, basically anything not water. This was all pre-health conscious days, but somehow I knew to keep my face looking clear and beautiful I should be drinking water. I stuck with the plan and it did not take long for me to acquire the taste for water. Shortly thereafter, I started working out more. This all helped me mitigate the stresses of college life, keeping up with grades and extracurriculars.
So which water on the market is the best water to drink?
I prefer to drink alkaline water whenever possible. Drinking alkaline water (that of above 7.0 pH) consistently, will help to raise the pH levels of the body and cause the tissues to throw off toxins. When the body becomes alkaline, the process of cleansing and detoxification is automatically induced. I talk in more detail about alkaline water here so you can read up on that if you’d like. At the juice bar, we have an alkaline water machine where customers can come and fill up a gallon jug for just $2. If you’re interested in buying a machine for your home, I recommend the Venus ionizer. As they say on their website, “get the benefits of ionized water without breaking the bank”. I think this one is more affordable than the Kangen machines.
When I’m on the road or traveling out of town, I opt for waters like Fiji, which you can find at most places. We’ve even gone on vacation and made sure to find a Whole Foods and bought Mountain Valley Spring Water.
