It honestly pains me to know that some women don’t eat because they think it will make them lose weight. We have to eat to support our brain and metabolic health.
If you have ever skipped a meal, ignored a growling stomach, or tried to survive on black coffee and willpower to hit a number on the scale, you are not alone. Society has spent decades teaching women that “less is better” when it comes to food. But as a clinical practitioner, I see the quiet devastation this narrative leaves behind: chronic brain fog, disrupted sleep, hormonal imbalances, and a permanently stalled metabolism.
Here is the hard biological truth: your brain is the most energy-demanding organ in your body, and your metabolism is not a calculator, it is a living survival system. When you starve your body, you are not just burning fat; you are actively shutting down your brain’s cellular powerhouses.
Metabolism Is the Law of Life, Not a Number on a Scale
In modern diet culture, “metabolism” has been reduced to whether someone burns calories quickly or slowly. But biologically, metabolism is much bigger than that. It is the fundamental capacity of a living organism to take in food and oxygen and convert them into the cellular energy, or ATP, needed to maintain life.
In fact, the absolute cessation of metabolism is the definition of death. Your metabolism is literally part of what keeps you alive.
That is why severe food restriction triggers such a powerful response from the body. When you drastically reduce your food intake, your body does not necessarily interpret what you are doing as a weight-loss strategy. It interprets the lack of available energy as a threat to survival and begins conserving resources.
One of the places we see this is in the mitochondria, the tiny structures inside your cells responsible for generating approximately 90% of your body’s ATP. Your body relies on metabolic sensors such as AMPK and SIRT1 to help maintain healthy mitochondria and create new ones. But during starvation and severe energy deprivation, mitochondrial biogenesis, the creation of new mitochondria, can become suppressed.
This matters tremendously for your brain.
Your neurons depend on a steady, uninterrupted supply of glucose and oxygen to communicate. When your mitochondrial oxidative capacity drops because your body does not have enough energy available, your brain has less cellular energy with which to perform its normal work. That energy depletion can contribute to synaptic dysfunction, memory lapses, mental exhaustion, and what many people simply describe as brain fog.
So when you are severely restricting food and wondering why you cannot concentrate, remember things, or think clearly, the answer may not be that you need more caffeine or more discipline.
Your brain may simply need to be fed.
The Starvation-Hypothyroidism Trap
Your brain is not the only system affected when your body senses an energy shortage. One of the most important casualties of severe food restriction can be your thyroid gland, which acts like your body’s metabolic thermostat.
When you consistently fail to consume enough calories to support basic physical activity, your brain can signal your thyroid to slow things down. This is a survival response. If food appears scarce, your body has a biological incentive to conserve energy rather than continue spending it at the same rate.
That slowdown can have consequences that seem completely contradictory to what you were trying to accomplish by eating less.
Your active thyroid hormone, T3, plays an important role in lipid metabolism. Among its functions, T3 increases the expression of LDL receptors in the liver. Those receptors help remove LDL cholesterol from your bloodstream.
When severe food restriction causes T3 levels to fall, however, that system can become less efficient. Reduced T3 can contribute to subclinical hypothyroidism, while reduced LDL receptor activity can impair the body’s ability to clear circulating lipids. As a result, cholesterol, ApoB, and fat storage can paradoxically rise even while someone is severely restricting food.
Then another metabolic problem begins.
Chronic calorie restriction in women can contribute to muscle and skeletal wasting, or sarcopenia. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so losing muscle reduces the amount of energy your body needs at rest. Over time, your basal metabolic expenditure falls.
You may then find yourself trapped in exactly the situation you were trying to avoid: your body now burns fewer calories at rest, making you feel as though you have to eat even less just to maintain your weight.
This is why endlessly cutting food is not a sustainable metabolic strategy.
You Don’t Have to Eat Less, You Have to Eat Differently
Much of the fear surrounding food comes from a simple assumption: if you allow yourself to eat until you are satisfied, you will automatically consume too many calories and gain weight.
But what you eat dramatically changes that equation.
In a randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open in 2026, researchers led by Dr. Hana Kahleova evaluated the metabolic effects of a low-fat, whole-food plant-based diet in adults with overweight.
The participants were not simply given smaller portions of their regular food. Instead, the composition of their diets changed. Their meals became rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes.
That change lowered the energy density of their food by approximately 30%.
Energy density refers to the number of calories contained within a given weight or volume of food. Whole plant foods tend to contain large amounts of water and fiber, which means they can provide substantial physical volume without packing in enormous numbers of calories.
And this is where the findings become particularly important for anyone who believes weight management requires going hungry.
Participants were instructed to eat ad libitum, meaning they could eat until they were full and satisfied. There were no calorie limits and no portion restrictions.
Yet even though participants ate the same weight of food, their daily calorie intake naturally decreased by an average of 357 calories, and they lost significant amounts of body weight and body fat.
They did not have to starve themselves.
They changed what filled their plates.
High-bulk, low-energy-density plant foods allow you to physically eat satisfying amounts of food while consuming fewer calories. That can help quiet hunger signals such as ghrelin while providing your metabolism with the nutrients and energy it needs without triggering the same starvation response created by severe restriction.
The lesson is not that you should become better at ignoring hunger.
The lesson is that you can build meals that allow you to honor it.
Nourishing Your Brain and Metabolic Health
Once you stop thinking about food primarily as something that needs to be restricted, you can begin thinking about what your brain, gut, thyroid, mitochondria, and metabolism actually need from your meals.
Fiber is an important place to start.
Foods such as legumes, whole grains, onions, artichokes, and root vegetables provide prebiotic fibers that nourish beneficial microorganisms in your gut. Among them are bacteria belonging to the Prevotella family.
When these bacteria ferment fiber, they produce short-chain fatty acids, or SCFAs, including butyrate. These compounds do far more than support digestion. They can influence communication along the gut-brain axis, cross the blood-brain barrier, help regulate neuroinflammation, and support neurotransmitter synthesis.
Protein matters as well, but more is not automatically better.
Modern diet culture heavily promotes massive animal protein intake for weight management, yet this is a dangerous metabolic trap. Clinical research demonstrates that animal proteins, highly concentrated in saturated fats, heme iron, and the inflammatory amino acid methionine, actively drive insulin resistance, worsen Type 2 diabetes, and significantly increase all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Unprocessed red meats and even lean white meats like skinless poultry directly promote metabolic dysfunction because microscopic animal fats integrated into the muscle tissue disrupt insulin receptors. In contrast, reducing dietary protein down to standard recommended levels (50 to 60 grams per day) by prioritizing fiber-rich plant proteins, which contain three times less methionine, unleashes a profound metabolic rescue. Swapping out animal meat for whole plant foods triggers up to a sixfold increase in the longevity and insulin-sensitizing hormone FGF21 (Fibroblast Growth Factor 21) in as little as a week, and can skyrocket FGF21 levels by 232% in just four meat-free days.
Rather than assuming that maximizing protein is always beneficial, the goal should be providing your body with an appropriate amount of calories while allowing your diet to supply the fiber, carbohydrates, phytonutrients, and other compounds your cells require. You can do both simultaneously.
There may also be nutritional strategies that support thyroid health. Clinical trials involving black cumin (Nigella sativa) have found that consuming approximately half a teaspoon of powdered black cumin daily can improve T3 levels, reduce thyroid-stimulating hormone, lower autoimmune thyroid antibodies, and support healthy weight management.
None of this requires starving yourself.
It requires feeding your biology differently.
Stop Fighting Your Body
Food is not the enemy.
It is the raw material your brain uses to think, your thyroid uses to regulate your metabolism, your gut bacteria use to produce beneficial compounds, your muscles use to maintain metabolically active tissue, and your mitochondria use to help keep you alive.
When you continually deprive your body of the energy it needs because you are afraid of gaining weight, you are asking your biology to function without adequate resources. Your body responds the only way it knows how: it adapts for survival.
Instead of asking, “How little can I eat?” perhaps the better question is:
“How can I nourish myself in a way that supports both my metabolic health and my brain?”
Fill your plate with the anti-inflammatory, nutrient-rich power of whole plant foods. Give your brain the fuel it needs. Give your mitochondria the raw materials they need to produce energy. Give your gut microbes the fiber they need to thrive.
You do not need to punish your body into becoming healthy.
You need to nourish it.
