If you are new to my site or this lifestyle, a raw vegan diet consists of plant-based, raw, and unprocessed foods. It excludes animal products, like meat and dairy. Following a 100% raw vegan diet means that you neither heat or cook food beyond 119 degrees, nor do you consume processed food; instead, you juice, blend, soak, sprout or dehydrate foods.
LaToya Davis is a raw vegan and holistic lifestyle coach who supports people in setting goals for their health journey that is practical and effective. Her focus is on the 4 levels of healing (spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical), which she believes is key to staying committed to one’s health journey, given that health is holistic and everything is connected.
If you’re interested in adopting a raw vegan lifestyle but don’t know where to start or struggling with prepping meals, LaToya has a free gift for you, highlighting five (5) practical ways to make raw vegan meal prep efficient. You can check that out here.
LaToya is the proud mother of a beautiful three-year-old girl. Throughout her pregnancy, she maintained a raw vegan diet. However, at 17 weeks, she had to make adjustments, such as increasing her protein intake since she was experiencing nausea from time to time. Doing this allowed LaToya to shake the nauseous feeling and be more energetic. “I started to up my protein by sprouting. We sprout different seeds, particularly sunflower seeds. I’m just being more mindful of the intake of my protein. I strive to do two smoothies a day with protein. Some days I know that I’ve hit my limit because I’m super full. Some days I just do one a day, in the morning because I’m like, you know what, I’ll fall asleep because I’m super full. I’ve been definitely hitting my protein, and I’ve been able to have a bigger appetite. I’m able to eat kale again, so I’m back at eating the stuff I used to eat; because of that, it’s easier for me to hit that protein intake level,” she said in one of her videos as she documented her pregnancy journey on YouTube.
At 17 weeks pregnant, LaToya saw many benefits of being on the raw vegan diet. “I feel like my skin is glowing. I can see it like it is glowing. I don’t have that weirdness that I had with the skin earlier about a month ago, where I felt like my skin was shedding and stuff like that. I’ve not experienced that anymore, thankfully.”
At 35 weeks pregnant, LaToya was even more mindful of what she was eating, giving preference to “heavier, nuttier, heartier meals.” She had to therefore reduce her intake of fruits. “My levels haven’t been over, but they are considered higher. I’m a raw vegan, and a lot of what we eat is fruit. Because of this pregnancy, I’ve been very mindful of my protein intake, hence why I feel like my baby is growing really well as all of the nutrients are going to my belly.”
LaToya does her best to raise her daughter on a raw vegan lifestyle. “Preparing your children’s meals and teaching them how to make their delicious meals is important. Educating them on nutrition and health and wellness and how it impacts us on so many levels is the most important. It is also important to have fun in the kitchen. Allow them to make choices based on what their household eats. I am aware that one day my daughter will make more choices when it comes to the food she eats. I hope that she intuitively chooses what is best for her body and has a healthy relationship with food.”
LaToya firmly believes that more parents should get engaged in cleaning up the school lunch program. “What our children eat impacts their moods and ability to truly focus while at school.” She knows that dairy produces mucus which impacts the immune system and is the cause of many illnesses related to the respiratory system and allergies.
