As a youth, my home was always filled with lots of plants. I didn’t really understand the importance at the time. My mom is from a country area (near Montego Bay) in Jamaica and is really into nature. She has a green thumb and can make anything grow.
I’ve continued the practice in my own home after learning the benefits of plants in the home (and office), which are numerous.
- better air quality
- reduced stress
- less anxiety
- enhanced mood
- improved brain function
- improved sleep
This is all due to the fact that plants filter the air, which allows for better sleep at night and supports a healing environment. Plants and humans have a perfect symbiotic relationship where they consume our carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the air for us to breathe.
This is especially important in the Winter when many of us keep windows closed. No new air comes in which can make us sick. Oxygen provides energy for detoxification.
Below is a cheat sheet to get started with indoor plants. Even if you feel you kill everything, keep trying. Just like preparing clean meals you love, it does take practice but it’s a fun journey of discovery.
